Themarket size of rice in India is more than 75,000 crores with an averageannual production of 85 million MT. Since rice is the staple food offarmers themselves, farmers retain roughly 40% of the produce for food,feed and seed purpose which does not enter into the trading valuechain. Of the balance 60% traded and marketed, about 50% is handled bypublic sector (the Food, Corporation of India assisted by various stateagencies) and the rest by private trade.
India exports rice to a large number of countries in the world. Indiastotal exports of rice were 2.2 million MT in 2001-2002 valued at Rs.3174 crores. Rice is mainly exported to Gulf countries, European Union,USA, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka,Japan etc.

Four major types of rice are produced worldwide:

Rice belongs to the family Graminae and as such exhibits traits similar to all other cereals. Cultivated rice is of two types; African or Oriental. The most common is that of species Oryza sativa (Oriental) with the probable countries of origin being South China to East India. Records show itbeing grown in China as early as 2800 B.C.

Rice is the most important and extensively grownfood crop in the world. It is the staple food of more than 60 percent of the world population and will remain as lifeline for the people inAsia and Pacific regions where 90% of it is produced and consumed.India has the largest area under rice in the world and ranks second inthe production after China. India has also emerged as a major rice consumer.
