The principle of BIA is that impedance in human body can be calculated by transmitting imperceptible electrical currents into the body. When electrodes flow through the body, resistance is naturally. Water in the body which contains electrolytes and is a good electrical conductor for flowing electrode. The greater the amount of water in a person's body, the easier it is for the current to pass through it. This resistance to water is used to determine the proportion of water in the body, of the lean body mass (fat-free mass) and of the body fat. Impedance is abundant in fat tissue, which contains only 10-20% water, while fat-free mass, which includes 70-75% water, allows the signal to pass much more easily. By using the impedance measurements along with a person's height and weight, and body type (gender, age, fitness level), it is possible to calculate the percentage of body fat, fat-free mass, and other body composition values.
