Priced at Rs 125 per kg, it would be available in Maharashtra andGujarat to begin with, in one and 2.5 kg packs. Mr. Sonani said it would beinitially available with select retailers and malls in Surat, Baroda and Ahmedabad, and wouldbe launched in Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar, Anand, Valsand and Vapi soon.

The Smart Balance rice has been tested at GI Labs in Toronto, Canada, and certified as low GI rice with the symbol programme of the University of Sydney, Australia.

He noted that consumption of this rice would help in weightmanagement, diabetes management, improve blood cholesterol level andreduce the risk of heart diseases.

This was processed under the specially patented hydrothermal processand the GI is brought down to 42-48. Mr. Sonani said it has a processingcapacity of 30 tonnes a day.

He said the Smart Balance Moolgiri rice is grown in theRaichur-Gangawati belt in Karnataka and has a glycemic index rangingbetween 60-65.
