With a DVR system, you can instruct your cameras to start recording only when motion is detected, thereby saving disk space. You can even instruct your system to mask i.e., ignore certain areas of the camera's view such as an adjacent street which normally has a car or two passing by so that normal motion does not trigger the "start recording" function.

This ability to access images remotely makes the DVR a perfect choice for video security surveillance systems. These systems store your surveillance videos on a hard disk drive in high-resolution formats so that when you need to see what happened, you see clear, high-quality video and not one of those fuzzy "could be anybody" images you may have become used to with VCR technology.

Because DVRs store data on a hard drive, network users with proper access rights can retrieve those stored images from anywhere on the network. Since today that is the World Wide Web that would mean you can monitor from your laptop (or PC) anywhere in the world.

Over time, the images on the tape can become blurred and virtually useless. With DVR technology, video images are recorded onto a hard disk as digital data. Those images can be retrieved thousands of times faster than those on an analog tape, and their crisp, clear digital quality never diminishes.

 DVR, or Digital Video Recorder, is the digital version of VCR. VCRs store video images onto a magnetically encoded tape as analog data. Viewing an image or video clip in the middle of the tape requires one to fast-forward or reverse through the tape until the desired image or clip is located. That takes time and produces wear on both the tape and the mechanical components which move the tape.
