The  Hom Pathumthani rice is just another genetically altered variant of the Thai Hom Mali or Jasmin rice. By way of Gamma ray treatment coupled with cross-breeding, the Pathumthani needs less time to mature and turns insensitive to light exposure. This gives the farmers more flexibility and greater productivity on both yearly and per-square unit bases. It was introduced as an attempt to yield the country higher revenue.
