Up until 1970, nearly all fishing rods were made from bamboo or fiberglass. Gamakatsu started looking for a way to make rods stronger and lighter, and saw carbon as an excellent material for
fishing rods. Other manufacturers were already producing rods with carbon in them but no one was producing a rod made from 100% carbon. Gamakatsu set out to make a fishing rod that would be lighter
and stronger than anything available at the time, but there were some obstacles to overcome.
