On each occasion when I have repaired a Civil war snare drum, viewed them in a museum collection or in pictorial form, I have never seen a d-ring or any catch on a drum. You won't see one on this drum either.
Tuning adjustments are made on the best snare strainer to come out of the Civil War and used by both the North and the South. The eyepiece is of Stag horn and is surrounded by solid brass tacks.
