Dutch artist Walter van Steen is one of those people who keep live this great dutch tradition. Living in Amsterdam, not far from the house were Rembrandt once lived (it's still there!) he seeks inspiration from the famous dutch painters of the 18-th century. He skillfully miniaturizes their work, adds his own creativaty, and applies them to the wooden surface of a old and worn iceskate. Thus transformed, these items become lovely objects, which in condensed way, incorporate many aspect of dutch traditions. It makes a special gift with a rare and distinct character. We have many more painted skates in stock, but not yet advertised.
In Holland ice skating is a traditional pasttime in winter, and decorating these scates was a known rorm of folk art. Especially around Hindelopen in Friesland , and in Noord Holland the decoration of household items like furniture or wooden shoes was common practice. Today little of these items are left, and much sought after by collectors. Very few people people practise these old crafts today.
