Planters are devices that deposit seeds or place plants at equal distances in rows at specified rates and cover them with soil. Unlike seed drill, in planter plant to plant distance is also maintained.  They are used for row crops such as maize, groundnut, cotton, beans, potato etc which require accurate placement of seeds for good yeild and to permit intercultivation. The number of seeds being planted is also important. For small grains, we measure the seed by volume as in drills, but for bold seeds like groundnut, maize, cotton 35000-50000 plants per hectare are to be planted by farmers with small range of variation.
