Inmarsat BGAN System

Regional BGAN satellite IP modems will continue to provide high-speed data connectivity up to 144Kbps. Existing customers will subsequently have the opportunity of upgrading to new terminals, which offer both broadband data (up to 492Kbps) and voice services.

Due to the launch of the Inmarsat-4 F3 satellite and the repositioning of the existing fleet, RBGAN services may close as early as the first week in November 2008. At this stage there is no definitive date for the service end. Because of this SatCom would strongly encourage you and your customers to migrate across to the latest technology BGAN!

SatCom have received the latest information from Inmarsat regarding the closure of the RBGAN service that is scheduled towards the end of 2008:

What if I already have Regional BGAN?

Offering global, high-speed voice and broadband data, BGAN is set to be the breakthrough service that takes mobile satellite communications to a new level of performance, usability and geographical reach.

It is for users who need access to key services such as voice, email and Internet, wherever they go - especially where terrestrial networks are poor or non-existent.

BGAN is for anyone who needs to take their office environment with them when they travel beyond the comfort zone of reliable modern telecoms.

Who is BGAN for?

BGAN enables users to remotely access corporate networks using a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection, to send emails, transfer files and access the internet, whilst making a telephone call at the same time.

Based on IP technology, BGAN delivers data rates of up to 492 Kbps.  The service is accessed via a small, lightweight satellite terminal - about the size of a laptop - which is easy to carry, quick to set up and simple to use. You have SMS, Voicemail and ISDN capabilities

The first two I-4 satellites were launched in 2005. The third I-4 satellite was successfully launched on 18th August 2008. Once successful in-orbit operations have been confirmed on the I-4 F3 satellite (around four weeks after launch), Inmarsat will initiate a programme of repositioning a number of satellites, including its I-4s, in order to optimise the network. The repositioning process for the I-4 satellites is currently planned to start in January 2009 and is expected to be completed by late February 2009.
