Cons: The GMR-2089 doesnt use more efficient Lithium ion batteries like the Cobras. Its similar to the GMR-2889, but the 700 mAh NiMH batteries are somewhat less powerful than the 800 mAh NiMH batteries with the more deluxe model. As with the GMR-2889, this unit lacks a vibrate alert; you can choose either tone or visual alerts. If youre in silent mode, which gives only the visual alert for the incoming call, there is a missed call indicator to remind you if you dont see the visual alert in time. This unit also lacks a built-in VOX hands free operation; VOX is only enabled when you plug in an optional headset. Keep in mind the legalities. This is a dual purpose radio. The 22 total channels include the 7 shorter range, lower wattage, FRS-only channels that do not require an FCC license, the 8 longer range, higher wattage, GMRS-only channels that do, plus the 7 shared channels that can be used either way. You should purchase an FCC license for the longer range GMRS usage. Application info is included with the units.

Pros: With more channel combinations than a CB, GMRS/FRS radios are ideal for quieter calls between cars in a convoy to share info about road conditions. Theyre also much smaller and lighter than CBs. Antennas are smaller, too, since these operate on a higher frequency (462/467 MHz versus 27 MHz). Theyre also ideal for on-foot use upon arrival. We take these to car races at places like Elkhart Lake, Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio and Indy. Theyre great for wandering the track grounds and keeping up with everyone. This unit is just below Unidens top model, the GMR-2889, but still includes stronger than average 700 mAh NiMH batteries (more typical is 500 to 600 mAh). One advantage of NiMH is their similarity in size and shape to AAA type batteries. If youre in a pinch and your rechargeable battery is empty a quick changeover to AAA alkaline disposables can get you going again immediately. Advertised range is 20 miles, but thats unobstructed line of sight. Realistically, expect 2 to 3 with obstacles like trees, buildings, etc. on GMRS and 1 to 2 on FRS. Why? GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) allows higher transmit power than FRS (Family Radio Service). A variety of high end features are here. Selectable power lets you choose max range or longer battery life. VOX circuitry works with optional headset. Choose tone or visual alert. The backlit LCD display has a channel indicator, battery meter and more. Also has 7 NOAA weather channels in addition to 3124 conventional GMRS/FRS channel combinations (22 channels/142 privacy codes). Channel scan is a handy feature. Includes two radios, two batteries, two belt clips and one two-port desktop charger.
