General
Cyflo has been successfully applied to tomatoes under protection in the Overberg region of South Africa since 2007. Plants are treated with a weekly application of 0.1%
Cyflo added to the foliar feed and pesticide programs.
Powery mildew (Erysiphe necator, formerly Uncinula necator) and phytophtora do not occur on these plants and the foliage is visibly healthier with increased blossoming, fruit set and general fruit
quality. The occurrence of pests and blossom-end-rot have decreased significantly.
Similar results have been achieved on open field tomatoes in Mpumalanga.
Improved fruit quality and shelf life. Cyflo, due to its molecular composition attaches to Calcium which is normally an immobile element and binds to gluco-protein receptors on the
cell membranes, mimicing the cellular membrane transport system of the plant. The mechanism is "osmotropic" in nature, meaning that once the Cyflo and the active ingredient are in the plant, the
distribution commences by the movement of the complete "solution" (not only the solvent or only the solute) from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. This means that the plant
need not be active in any of its systemic/distribution functions to effect Cyflo distribution. The plant only needs to have plant sap. The distribution continues until homogeneity throughout the
plant has been established. Calcium can thus be translocated during times of the day when temperature rises, stomas close, transpiration comes to a halt and the plants are most at risk of damage
caused by blossom-end-rot.
Increased calcium uptake results in stronger cell walls which has a direct bearing on quality and shelf life of the fruit.
Better control of pests. Cyflo increases the absorption and distribution of pesticides in plants. Cyflo will change contact chemicals into systemic chemicals and/or make partly systemic chemicals more systemic in their function leading to better pest control. Cyflo improves the distribution of nutrients that would normally form complexes that affect the pH of the plant sap. It is known that aphids occur on plants where the pH is high. With better control of thrips the occurrence of certain viral plant diseases is reduced.
Occurrence of fungal diseases reduced or completely removed. Cyflo stimulates the phyto-alexin in the plant. This is directly linked to the plants' natural immunity against all fungal diseases. Cyflo improves the distribution of nutrients that would normally form complexes that affect the pH of the plant sap. It is known that fungal infections occur on plants where the pH is low. Cyflo, being a mono-layered phospholipid, assists in repairing damaged cell membranes, consisting of a double-layered phospholipid, such damage being the result of fungi rhizomes. This repair reduces the risk of secondary fungal infestations.
Increased blossoming and fruit set due to stimulation of plant hormone production and overall plant vitality.
Increased Root Mass.
Larger root mass results in improved nutrient contact in the soil and hence the potential of a healthier, better yielding plant.
Vigorous growth due to increased plant hormone production and a sufficient supply and translocation of nutrients.
Improvement in the occurrence of Blossom-end-rot. This is directly linked to the better uptake and distribution of Calcium within the plant. Plant stress due to high temperature is reduced and plants recover more rapidly after such periods.
Overview
The use of Cyflo as a foliar application in conjunction with foliar feeds on tomatoes can assist in a number of ways. To obtain best results when adding Cyflo to a
spray program, always ensure that the nutrient status of the soil/hydroponic medium are balanced and sufficient. The stimulation of plant hormone production will result in a greater demand for
these nutrients and optimise plant metabolic function, leading to an increase in yield.
