embroidered silk

  • ANTIQUE PUNJAB PHULKARI

Phulkari is a technique of working with embroidered silk on cotton. These antique pieces used as throws and bedspreads by the royal families are in the prized garden (bagh) style where the surface of the cloth is so densely embroidered that in places the embroidery becomes the fabric itself.
The common stitches used are darn, chain, herringbone, satin and stem. The soft, untwisted, floss silk yarn is embroidered with a needle about three inches in length.
