These days one of the biggest problems facing this industry is the lack of knowledge about the
product, its features, capabilities and application. No advise or sometimes the wrong advise is
given on the type of yarn to specify, product type, backings, installation and maintenance. 
  
  
 Fiber  
  Nylon, Polypropylene and Wool are the primary fibers used in commercial carpeting. Polypropylene is used when budgets are limited or if you desire frequent replacements. Polypropylene though stain resistant tends to get crushed and matted sooner. Wool carpets are normally used in lighter traffic areas.. Wool + Nylon blends are popular in the hospitality industry. Nylon is the most preferred carpet fiber for the commercial flooring industry. Nylon is available in two types Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6. Nylon 6.6 has a denser molecular structure and a different fiber shape. Nylon 6.6 is considered superior. However, the bottom line is that nylons are the preferred fibers for high traffic areas as it has excellent abrasion resistance, better resilience and superior cleanability to wool and polypropylene fiber.
   
 
 
 
 Carpet construction  
  The construction of a particular carpet loop cut or a combination of both determines its appearance. Loop pile is preferred in corridors, lobbies, offices and in public areas. Loop piles of low dense construction generally provide a better surface for rolling traffic. Cut pile or cut and loop pile carpets are suitable for administrative areas, libraries, individual offices, board rooms and guest rooms.
   
 
 
 
 Backings  
  The secondary backing is the most important part of the carpet as it adds dimensional stability and performance characteristics to the carpets. Secondary backings such as action back, smart back, soft back, unitary back, PVC and PU each add a different technology for varying reasons. Certain backings can keep slightly elevated moisture from being a concern, while others add comfort. The most backing technology is in polyurethanes which adds the most performance characteristics to carpets.
   
 
 
 
 Stain Resistance  
  The single biggest reason for premature carpet replacement is stains. Choose carpet that comes with a stain removal warranty.
   
 
 
 
 Sub floor conditions  
  Floor coverings of all kinds will fail without a properly prepared sub floor. Most commercial flooring installations are done by gluing it direct to a concrete substrate. If the sub floor is not suitable to receive the floor covering, the success of the entire project can be at risk.
   
 
 
 
 Maintenance  
  Advances in soil and stain resistance make carpet a viable alternative to other floor coverings. However, the importance of a consistent and thorough maintenance plan plus a plan to address unusual spills is of importance regardless of the type of floor coverings.
   
 
 
 
 Life Cycle Costing   
  Life Cycle Costing Calculates the true cost of carpet over time to determine the best value for money. It should take in to consideration the initial cost of installed carpet, its useful life (based on durability and appearance retention) maintenance expenses and replacement costs. Unfortunately, often a carpet is selected simply because it is the cheapest. A poor choice carpet based on price alone will not provide the best value for money.
