This hand made silk on silk carpet was woven in a fair trade workshop in Khiva,Western Uzbekistan. The workshop was founded with the intention of bringing the luxurious crafts of years gone by to
the world. These carpets are made with all natural dyes from roots and stones gathered from all over Central Asia, just the way it was done hundreds of years ago.
The design on this piece is taken from the door of the treasury of the khan of Khiva in the old fortress. The design on the carved wooden door has been meticulously copied and is beautifully
preserved in this glimmering silk carpet.
Our workshop employs only adults, requiring a mentoring period while the weavers learn the art of weaving on wooden looms. They are them promoted and eventually become trainers of new workers. This
provides much needed income for families where the economy is poor, as well as giving a trade that will be a skill for life-long employment. Our workers are well paid and given comfortable working
conditions as well as benefits.
Make your purchase and help to preserve tradition and ancient handcrafts as well as adorning your home with a one of a kind piece of art that accurately replicates a design from ages long
forgotten.
