FIVE Bachmann HO Scale Trolley Cars
Here we have a collection of FIVE trolley cars. The three green and tan ones model the old Philadelphia trolleys and are labeled PTC. They are Walther's part number 160-62945. I know the paint
scheme is accurate, because I have been a rider on those old Philly cars, as they sparked along the streets. The yellow ones (Walthers #160-62946) are the same body, but decorated in a yellow
generic paint scheme -you fix 'em up. If they look a bit funky to you, its probably because the bodies are too high off the ground. The real ones had skirting that covered the wheels. Furthermore,
these models were not designed to be highly accurate replicas in every detail. Passengers are indicated with silhouettes. These are most convincing in dim light because the cars are illuminated
(and all of them do light up). In a prototypical deployment, they would wind up and down streets, appearing and disappearing from view among buildings. And that kind of scenario works for these
-they look pretty good.
Although each comes in the original box, only one box has the instructions and diagram. But its the same for all 5, so no worries. Three of the boxes have the foam cradle, 2 do not (I'll pack them
well, however). These are all used, and they were used on a layout which was a bit gritty. Accordingly, you should clean them and lubricate them.
I ran them all on my layout, and they all DO run and light up. However, one of the green and tan units has a "hesitation issue." It will zip along, then STOP. The more I ran it, the better it ran
before pausing to catch its breath. My OPINION is that the electrical contact between motor and track is frail. Contact is made by fragile copper wipers which press up against the back of the
wheels. Clean the wheels and the contacts -and bend them a bit more toward the wheel surface, and I believe the problems will go away.
It was kind of funny to watch them on my layout with its steep grades. These guys are light weights, so there was some wheel spinning when it came to climbing a grade, but they hung on and made it
to the top. And they had no problem passing through the turnouts. In actual practice, trolleys ran slowly along basically level streets -so use them that way.
Three of these have appearance issues -being some blobs of paint which were (accidentally, I can only suppose) spilled onto the cars.
