This badge was worn by the Arizona Rangers which was created in 1901 by the Arizona Territorial Legislature. The Rangers were organized to deal with the outlaws, especially rustlers that were
rampant along the Mexican border. The Rangers were based upon the Texas Rangers and were well-trained and outfitted with the best modern weapons and horses that money could buy. A
company originally consisted of a captain, a sergeant and 12 privates but in 1903 the privates were increased to 26 men.
The first Captain was Burton Mossman who had been the manager of the Aztec Land and Cattle Co., also known as the "Hash Knife Outfit" in northern Arizona and was living in Bisbee ranching at the
time. After organizing the original group of Rangers, Mossman stepped down and was replaced by Thomas Rynning and then Garry Wheeler. The Rangers were disbanded in 1909 and were very
effective during their years of service. They shut down several outlaw bands and helped resolve strikes at the various copper mines along the border. Many of the men who originally
signed up were ex-members of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. All of these men were skilled at riding, horsemanship, tracking and marksmenship. They wore their badges out in the open to
make known who they were.
