What to look for when choosing a Gas Analyser?

Don't be fooled by advertisements! You can use lambda sensor/s to MONITOR well tuned engines. This is what engine manufacturer's do. But, there is NO WAY you can rely on a Lambda Sensor ALONE to hot-tune an engine or repair an emissions problem. Remember, you can get Lambda=1 under different circumstances and with different gas values (clearly rich mixtures such as HC = 1547 and CO = 3.5, for example, can still give you Lambda=1).

Simply put, the more the merrier. 4 Gas (CO, HC, CO² and O²) channel analysis is probably sufficient for most workshops. Only if you are into hot engines or performance tune-ups using Dynamometers is 5^th gas (NOx) analysis important. But, don't be tempted to invest in anything less than a 4 Gas analyser for combustion emission analysis because, with every missing gas channel, you eliminate an important diagnostic procedure that only a 4-5 gas analyser can provide.

Smoke emissions from a power plants chimney are the best indicator as to whether or not its generator is burning fuel at optimal efficiency. Analysis of these emissions identifies if fuel efficiency is maximised and pollution minimised. Economic efficiency, determined by fuel consumption and power generation performance depends entirely on optimal fuel combustion. This is exactly the same for automotive engines. The only way to establish for certain if an engine is delivering optimal performance is to analyse combustion emissions by use of a gas analyser. Given the volatility of fuel prices, fuel economy is one of the most important service items you can provide your customers and you can only do this if you are able to properly analyse vehicle exhaust emissions. A gas analyser is the only instrument that will actually prove your Tune-Up to be precise and capable of optimising the fuel consumption of your customers automobile!
