Communication interfaces or VCI (vehicle communication interface) represent the interface between the OBD plug (SAE J1962) in the vehicle and an offboard diagnostics device (e.g. a PC). This allows them to transmit data between the vehicle and offboard diagnostics devices. The main function of these modules consists of the communication between offboard diagnostics device and the ECU in the vehicle. A variety of communications protocols are used for this purpose.
