Pros: Many of us have GPS needs other than just in the car. Boating, camping, hiking and bicycling are just a few of the other activities that may lend themselves to a GPS navigator. Why not one unit that can do it all? Many handheld units have no mapping overlay on the screen at all; those just show latitude and longitude. Of those that do have mapping, many of them have no way of giving you turn-by-turn instructions. Youre instructed to go from point A to point B in a straight line. That might be OK if youre hiking on foot or in a boat, but its a bit impractical to cut through a cornfield in your car. The Garmin 76CSx is one of the few handheld GPS units that not only have a built-in map of major highways and Interstates, but its also able to give you turn-by-turn instructions like an automotive GPS unit. How about boating, camping and the like? Not only is it waterproof, it even floats. Along with the similar Garmin 76Cx, these are the only Garmin GPS units that combine these features in one unit. Like most handheld models, the 76CSx can run an extended period (18 to 30 hours) on just two AA batteries. The bright color screen (2.2 by 1.6) is easily readable in strong sunlight. The 76CSx also includes an electronic compass and barometric altimeter that helps track changing weather conditions. This unit can handle custom point of interest (POI) downloads from Garmin-approved partners for things like speed cameras and more. The 76CSx includes a wrist strap, plus a USB cable and a blank 128MB micro SD card for additional POI downloads. This card is removable, but since it stores inside the waterproof battery compartment youll not have to worry about it getting wet.
