History : | The Bentley Continental R was unveiled in 1991 after six years of development and it became an instant success. Its stylish sports coupe coachwork captured the imagination of Bentley enthusiasts and the orders flooded in. In 1996 the directors at Jack Barclay in London took ten Continentals Rs from the production line and gave them a number of cosmetic upgrades, including the addition of flared wheel arches, which then became a standard fitting on the Continental T which was introduced later that year. The success of the Continental R and the slightly more sporty Continental T made it inevitable that a convertible variant would be developed and in 1995 Sergio Pininfarina was approached and given the task of styling the Bentley Continental R convertible which became known as the Azure. In 1997 Jack Barclay repeated their styling upgrades, this time on ten Bentley Azures, to celebrate their 70th anniversary. Five cars were produced in holly green with green leather and a further five were finished in silver, with dark blue leather and a dark blue hood. We were pleased to be able to offer two of the ten Continental R Jack Barclay Specials in recent times and now we are able to offer one of the ten Azures. The list of cosmetic upgrades on this particular example is substantial and they include the fitting of flared wheel arches, which are less pronounced than on the Continental T with slightly more subtle lines. The front bumper has also been subtly re-styled and chrome mesh grilles have been fitted into the vents beneath. The front of the car is adorned with a chromium plated radiator shell finished with a mesh insert. The standard Azure seats have been fitted but with ruched leather. The standard woodwork has been replaced with a highly figured variant. The Bentley Continental T five spoke sports alloy wheels have also been fitted along with a larger sports exhaust. Further upgrades have been added since the car was supplied by Jack Barclay in 1997 which include a CD stacker unit which has been concealed in the boot, a fold out stereo/LCD screen fitted in the dashboard and a DVD/CD player fitted in the glove compartment. Screens have also been fitted into the headrests which are complimented with wireless headphones. This 36,000 mile example is complete with dark blue lambswool rugs along with its original books and tools. It has been well maintained, having a good service history largely with Jack Barclay in London and presents very well cosmetically, whilst performing beautifully on the road. This particular motor car is a very rare variant of this much sought after model and is one not to be missed. |
