The RX-8 has 4 wheel ABS with EBD that provide ample stopping power, giving drivers the full benefit of the car's dynamic sports car capabilities. The RX-8 is also equipped with a driver's side SRS airbag featuring dual-stage deployment and a passenger's side SRS airbag. In addition, the car has an intrusion minimizing brake pedal to help reduce foot and leg injuries in a frontal collision.
Safety
The small engine made it possible for Mazda to design a double wishbone front suspension that plays a big role in the RX-8's excellent handling. The rear suspension system has a multilink design that uses five links to achieve isolation and independent tuning of multiple suspension forces.
The RX-8's engine, called the Renesis, is small and light. Because it is mounted low and toward the center of the car, the center of gravity is correspondingly low as well. When driving under slippery conditions the RX-8 will benefit from its perfect 50/50 weight balance and available traction/stability control system.
At the heart of the RX-8 is the Renesis rotary engine. Although it displaces only 1.3 liters, it cranks out an impressive 207 horsepower. To reinforce that idea, the RX-8 is festooned with triangular shapes that mimic the design of the engine's rotor.
Under the hood
The multilink rear suspension has the added benefit of reducing intrusion into the trunk, making it possible to carry two full size golf bags in the RX-8.
Interior
Mazda has chosen to be bold with its design of the RX-8. The hood is low and the nose leans forward. The cabin is unusually long because it has two small doors behind the main doors. They are handy for rear passengers to get on and off without having to adjust the front seats. There are also no centre posts to obstruct both the rear front and rear passengers.
