Safety
The Passat has a four-link front axle, a torsion beam rear axle, and an anti-roll bar at both front and rear. This ensures not only smooth, straight-line running, but
also exact cornering when steering into and out of bends. Plus, with disc brakes all round, an anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic brake pressure distribution
(EBD, you can rest assured that the Passat can be braked safely, and as quickly as possible.
To assure a high level of active safety, the Passat has an electronic stability programme ESP as standard. It continually compares the direction required by the driver
via a steering wheel sensor with the actual vehicle movement. If the system registers considerable deviation, it acts on the engine or brake management system within
milliseconds to ensure that critical situations do not arise.
The body has been constructed in such a way that the major part of impact energy in a crash is absorbed and distributed this is particularly important for a large saloon
like the Passat. Specially reinforced structures absorb this energy and ensure that stress on the occupants is as low as possible. High-strength bearers in all four
doors prevent high levels of deformation in a side crash.
In addition, passengers are protected by up to eight airbags. Two front airbags and two side airbags at the front - for the driver and front passenger - are standard in
the Passat. You can opt for additional curtain airbags at front and rear as an optional extra.
Other standard features included in the safety equipment of the Passat are height-adjustable 3-point inertia reel seat belts with belt tensioners for the front seats and
outer rear seats.
