The role of threonine in the stabilization of the glycophorin A transmembrane helix dimer has been examined. A study of the role of threonine in serine transport in cultured Porphyromonas gingivalis has been reported.Addition of threonine to cultured Saccharomyces cerevisiae under limited glucose has been shown to lead to enhanced mRNA levels of the isocitrate lyase gene ICL2 and increased activity of the enzyme 2-methylisocitrate lyase.
A review of the biosynthesis and degradation of L-threonine in Escherichia coli has been reported. A comprehensive discussion of the chemistry of threonine has been published.
L-Threonine is one of the two biological amino acids with a hydroxyl substituted side chain, and thus is hydrophilic in character. Threonine is biosynthesized from aspartate through the formation of L-aspartate-4-semialdehyde, L-homoserine, and 4-phospho-L-homoserine as intermediates. In turn, threonine can be metabolized to a-ketobutyrate, and to pyruvate by way of the intermediate aminoacetone.
