TMS is an advanced application for management and monitoring of the system. At installation, the SmartMeters have no pre-configured schedules or thresholds. Each SmartMeter goes through a provisioning process in TMS that sets the utilitys required parameters. Once the SmartMeter is provisioned, it is the responsibility of the SmartMeter to send its data to TMS. Since TMS is used to configure the SmartMeters, it is aware of the schedules for all SmartMeters under its control. If SmartMeters fail to report in, TMS can take appropriate corrective action. In this way, devices are polled by exception rather than as the rule. This model provides for greater throughput than other alternatives.
The Advanced Communication Network provides the infrastructure for data transportation. SmartSynch has designed both the SmartMeter and TMS with the flexibility to accommodate various network infrastructures and protocols.
The SmartMeter consists of a solid-state meter, an advanced SSI module and a communication device. These components work in conjunction to become an intelligent client to TMS. The ANSI standard meter provides all standard metering functions and acts as the database for the integrated device by storing metering data in ANSI tables. The SSI module is responsible for monitoring various tables within the meter, executing scheduled tasks and monitoring for power outages or other alarm conditions. The SmartMeter System is designed for SmartMeters to operate in an autonomous manner, having responsibility for monitoring both interval schedules (daily, weekly, etc.) and exceptions. In this way, data can be sent from the device in near real time. This model differs from traditional metering models in which each device is polled remotely by a head-end software system.
