VMware Infrastructure

VMware ESX Server
VMware ESX Server is the foundation for the dynamic, self optimizing IT infrastructure. VMware ESX Server is a robust, production-proven virtualization layer that abstracts processor, memory, storage and networking resources into multiple virtual machines.

VMware Virtual SMP
VMware Virtual SMP makes it possible for a single virtual machine to span up to four physical processors, or CPUs. These processors share the same memory, and work on any task regardless of the location of the task in memory.

VMware VMFS (Virtual Machine File System)
VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) is a high performance cluster file system that provides storage virtualization optimized for virtual machines. Each VM is encapsulated in a small set of files and VMFS is the default storage system for these files on physical SCSI disks and partitions.

VMware DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler)
VMware DRS dynamically allocates and balances computing capacity across a collection of hardware resources aggregated into logical resource pools. When a virtual machine experiences an increased load, VMware DRS automatically allocates additional resources by redistributing virtual machines among the physical servers in the resource pool.

VMware HA (High Availability)
VMware HA provides easy to use, cost effective high availability for applications running in virtual machines. In the event of physical server failure, affected virtual machines are automatically restarted on other production servers with spare capacity.

VMware Consolidated Backup
VMware Consolidated Backup provides a centralized backup facility for virtual machines that works in conjunction with many leading backup tools. It enables third party backup tools to protect virtual machines and their contents from a centralized backup server rather than directly from an ESX Server.

VMware VMotion
VMware VMotion enables the live migration of running virtual machines from one physical server to another with zero downtime, continuous service availability, and complete transaction integrity.

VMware Storage VMotion
VMware Storage VMotion enables the live migration of running virtual machine disk files within and across storage arrays. Building on the success of VMware VMotiona production proven technology used for the live migration of virtual machines Storage VMotion relocates virtual machine disk files from one shared storage location to another shared storage location.

VMware Update Manager
VMware Update Manager manages and automates patch management and tracking of VMware ESX Server hosts and select Microsoft and Linux virtual machines. This component of VMware Infrastructure 3 enables automatic enforcement of compliance to mandated patch levels.
