The final tier resides with the reader. In the event of total power failure or break in communication, the reader will continue to function for up to 4 hours, while storing all clock data on the reader itself. Once communication and/or power is re-established, the Application Server will retrieve the data on the readers and ensure it reaches the database server. All data retrieved from the readers in offline mode is marked as offline clocks.

The second tier is called the Application Server. This server is in constant communication with the database server, ensuring that data is synchronised and kept up to date. However, this function is not the main responsibility of the Application Server. The Application Server is an Intelligent Decision maker, responsible for managing access and conditions pertaining to individuals and zones. Once an individual passes the required checks, the reader will be informed to open access to the zone. Should communication fail to the central database server, the Application Server will securely hold on to it until communication is re-established.
