The heartwood is a rich reddish brown with some darker streaks. This is a very hard wood with a clear reddish tone. Redwood is a very hard wood. Its specific gravity is around 0. 80 and the Janka Hardness of this wood is about 2, 250 for dry wood. It behaves well during the drying process. It does dry slowly but with very little degrade. Due to its hardness, this is a wood that is difficult to work with (cut and nail) , especially when it is dry. However, the characteristics that make Redwood difficult to work with in the construction phase are the same characteristics that ensure durability of the project. The Janka hardness indicates that this is an excellent candidate wood for flooring projects. Because of its hardness, it is very resistant to termites.
