In India the art of pottery making is as old as history itself. Pottery is one of the oldest traditional occupations in rural India. Pottery production is mainly confined to manufacturing of pots and pans, bricks; country made tiles etc. with conventional methods. Besides, these, there are a number of non-conventional items which have great demand everywhere and which could be produced by the potters. The first step in improving the equipment by KVIC was to design and introduce the improved potter's wheel with ball bearings for the benefit of village potters. This has several advantages over the traditional wheels being used by potters from time immemorial. Small size pug mills suitable for mixing and pugging clay by small groups of potters and other simple potter's tools were designed and introduced by KVIC.
