The bog oak supplied by Strata has not been sculpted or treated and as such presents a blank canvas for sculptors while offering consumers a piece of history older that even the aincent pyramids which can be used as conversation piece both indoors and outdoors.
Over time the tannin in the oak reacted with iron naturally present in the bog to produce a dark brown almost black wood now known as bog oak. Once reclaimed this bog oak reacts with oxygen in the air leading to the formation of a dense almost ebony coloured timber.
Over 5000 years ago, during the times of aincent Irish tribes, Ireland was covered in dense forests. The continual layering of vegitation over time lead to the formation of many bogs, some trees were swallowed up as these bogs expanded. The lack of oxygen in the waterlogged peat meant the natural process of decay was prevented thus preserving the wood similar to that of fossils.
