Back in August 2005 Canon 'defined a new D S L R category' (their words)with the E O S 5D. Unlike any previous 'full frame' sensor camera, the 5Dwas the first with a compact body (i.e. not having an integral verticalgrip) and has since then proved to be very popular, perhaps because ifyou wanted a full frame D S L R to use with your Canon lenses and youdidn't want the chunky E O S-1D style body then the E O S 5D has been youronly choice. Three years on and two competitors have turned up in theshape of the Nikon D700 and Sony D S L R-A900, and Canon clearly believesit's time for a refresh.
