The new PlayStation 2 released by Sony Computer Entertainment in November 2004 is a complete redesign of the current PlayStation 2 (SCPH-50000CB). Other than the addition of a built-in Ethernet port for network gaming (plus a dial-up modem port for North American models), the new architecture retains the basic functions and design philosophy of the current model, but at a 75% reduction in volume and 55% in weight. Contributing to this reduction is the fact that the power supply in now in a separate enclosure and the large expansion bay in the current model has been eliminated in the new console. Sony has no plans to add HDD capability to the new model.
