SM1 -- Solarex MSX1 polycrystaline panel, constructed behind a glass substrate with a space-age film coating, mounted in an extruded black anodized aluminum frame.
SM5 -- Solarex MSX5L polycrystaline marine panel, constructed on a lightweight aluminum substrate with a space-age film coating.
SM10 -- Solarex MSX5L polycrystaline marine panel, constructed on a lightweight aluminum substrate with a space-age film coating.
The panels can power the OWL data logger and auxiliary equipment, and charge The OWL secondary battery to cover nighttime and inclimate weather when the sun is not available. The OWL itself draws only a fraction of a milliamp when operating in its power-saving sleep mode, wherein it wakes up briefly every six seconds to take readings. Any of these panels, even the smallest, and even in dim outdoor light, can power the OWL in sleep mode and recharge its battery for extended deployment. The larger panels are called for in situations where the OWL will need to operate additional equipment on a continuous basis. For example, some turbidometers, or dissolved oxygen meters, require an extended warm-up interval and relatively high currents, before they will return valid data. The larger panels are also a good bet in marginal light conditions, such as a forest floor or canyon.
