Providing an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for an application that is normally
connected to the national power grid, requires a system that automatically recognizes
and caters for the loss of energy from the normal source. A continuous backup
supply of power is provided from a bank of batteries designed to match the load
demands of the house, office or factory. The charging of the batteries is provided
by photovoltaic (PV) cells or battery chargers, and they are on constant stand-by to
take over electrical loads if the mains power supply is lost. An inverter changes the
battery DC current to a suitable AC supply for equipment and appliances that usually
operate from a mains supply. In the event of power loss, the system has the intelligence to recognize and compensate
for the situation and provide energy at the perfect level to take over the load demands of the installation. When mains
power is restored, the system must prevent overloading of any components or connected units. A programmable logic
controller (PLC) is used for all load management and switching, controlling and improving the overall load profile functions.
Without this kind of control of the current supply, expensive and irreplaceable equipment, records and settings can
be totally lost or destroyed.
