Simply put, the light-emitting diode is a solid-state device, much different than an incandescent lamp. It comprises an alloy crystal placed into a reflective cup and chemically bonded to
tiny wires, then encapsulated in epoxy. When electric current runs through those wires, the crystal material is excited. That excitement is dissipated in the form of energy, a small part of
which is heat, most of which is in the form of light.
Different alloys produce different colors. Each has its own life span and brightness. LEDs' potential as a sign medium and light source has been known from the start. Sourcing the proper
chemicals and alloys has triggered intense research for many years. The
future of all forms of illumination is at stake. leds are having very low power consumption.generally,a leds is designed to operate at 1.8-4.0v,0.02-0.03A current,that mean,it need no more
than 0.1w to operate.and,if the led is operated at a desired rated voltage,current and enviroment,its life could up to 100000hours.
Due to the special materials that used to make leds,during electrons transition,leds mainly emit electromagentic energy in the visible parts of spctrum,unlike the incandescent filaments
heated,which emit a lot of electromagnetic energy in the infrared part of the spectrum which cannot be seen but is felt as heat.in other words,leds can convert almost all of the energy used
into light,and therefore,leds are of high luminous efficiency and low heat emitting.the best led in the market now emits 321lm/w,which is almost twice as efficient as an equivalent
tungsten-filament light bulb,and it has up to that 80lm/w,which is as bright as 30w fluorrescent
lights in 2008.
LEDs are made from non-toxic materials,unlike fluorescent lights with mercury that will pose a pollution danger,leds are be recycled too.
