Atmel's ASIC design flow keeps design time and cost to a minimum by extensive re-use of one of the richest IP libraries in the industry. For microcontroller-based designs, it enables hardware and application software to be developed in parallel, and includes an emulation phase to validate both the hardware and software of the device before committing it to silicon. An extensive worldwide network of third-party design centers and suppliers of application development tools, operating systems and application code modules provides the support that is vital to a right-first-time, on-time ASIC.

Atmel ASICs are distinguished by custom on-chip analog, developed by Atmel's in-house team of industry-leading analog designers. Power management technology, either on-chip or on a dedicated companion chip, keeps energy consumption to a minimum under all conditions of use. Embedded Flash or EEPROM nonvolatile memory further raises the level of integration, enhancing system security and reducing the overall bill-of-materials for the application. Atmel's bridges the gap between microcontroller standard products and ASICs. Comprising a fixed portion that includes the microcontroller core, memories, peripherals and standard interfaces together with a for application-specific logic, CAP keeps NRE to a minimum while providing a product that is close in performance and unit price to a standard-cell ASIC. CAP can also be used for product qualification and ramp-up before transitioning to a fully optimized standard-cell ASIC for high volume production.

Atmel excels in ASICs that require digital logic plus analog plus embedded NVM, and on application-specific microcontrollers. To reduce the design time and cost of microcontroller-based systems-on-chip, Atmel offers a range of ARM?- or AVR?-based architecture platforms as the starting point for an ASIC. Based on highly parallel internal buses for maximum data throughput, these include on-chip memories, peripherals and a wide range of industry-standard interfaces. Each ASIC is derived from the appropriate platform by the selection of the required peripherals and interfaces, and the addition of application-specific logic.
