An image sensor is a device that converts an optical image to an electrical signal. It is used mostly in digital camera and other image devices. A CMOS (Complementary Oxide Metal Semiconductor) chip is a type of active pixel sensor made using the CMOS semiconductor process. Extra circuitry next to each photo sensor converts the light energy into a voltage, and other circuitry on the chip converts the voltage to digital data. CIS CSP (CMOS image sensor chip scale package) packs image sensors and other optical devices in form factor identical to the chip size itself. Today, about 35% of CIS CSP can be found in latest consumer cell-phones and notebook cameras are encapsulated at wafer level.
