ABStat Coating is a proven method for providing scuff resistance and improved lubricity for PET containers. The increased lubricity improves handling characteristics, reduces line jams, and saves money.

The water- ABStat mixture will separate over time. The mixture needs periodic agitation to keep a homogeneous mixture.

This composition is only a starting point to finding the necessary proportions to provide the anti-static protection, increased lubricity, and increased scuff resistance. The proportions may need to be varied for each specific PET container type. All components must be food-grade products.

The following represents a generic formula, which may or may not be suitable for your specific application:

PET manufacturers have had success applying various formulations of the ABStat , anti-static compounds, anti-microbial agent and filtered water. Mixing the components on-site allows the PET manufacturers flexibility in using different formulations for different containers. The PET manufacturer also saves considerable shipping costs of not shipping water to their facility, which is available on-site.

The mixture of ABStat , an anti-static compound, and water is prone to bacteria growth. If the mixture is not consumed within 24 hours, the mixture will need to be treated with an anti-microbial agent. Isopropyl alcohol is a commonly used anti-microbial agent for PET coating mixtures. Isopropyl alcohol is extremely flammable; therefore the customer needs to ensure proper venting procedures. Other food-grade anti-microbial agents may be used to inhibit bacteria growth.

The amount of ABStat that needs to be applied to a container varies according to the container composition, dimensions, and end-user line equipment. The PET resin mixture will impact the amount of lubrication. Containers that have sharp corners are more prone to line jams, and therefore need more lubrication in those areas. Also, the customer's fill-line dimensions speed and equipment tolerances are all factors in the amount of lubrication that should be applied to the container. Applying excessive coating mixture may cause decreased label adhesion or label smudging. Some containers need lubrication all over the container, whereas others need only a little lubrication in only a few spots. The container manufacturer, working with end-user, will have to determine the necessary amount of lubrication.

ABStat is often used as an integral part of anti-static / lubrication mixture. The anti-static compound reduces the static voltage generated during PET container formation. Reducing the static voltage improves the PET container appearance as it reduces the dust accumulation on the container. The ABStat Coating and an anti-static compound are combines with purified water, and then sprayed on PET containers. The mixture of ABStat and Anti-Stat provides the benefits of both coatings in a single application.
