Bitumen emulsions are subject to their own test procedures. These are the key tests used for determining their properties: ? Consistency (Saybolt Viscosity test) ? Bitumen Content test- This test is to determine the quantity of water present in a material expressed as a percentage by mass of the material. ? Sieve Residue test- It is the percentage by mass of a residue obtained by heating a bituminous material to the required temperature and having a specified standard penetration value. ? Distillation Test- If the unknown bitumen proves to be asphalt and has an odor that indicates the presence of a distillate (such as an odor of kerosene or naphtha), a distillation test will indicate the character and approximate grade. From the distillation test, the bitumen percentage and grade can be known.
