, the second largest corporate body in the world, having about 4.43 (as on 31.Dec. '06) lakh employees with headquarters in Kolkata, is a holding Company under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. It was formed as a public sector undertaking in November, 1975 for reorganizing the nationalized coal mines and insuring integrated development of coal, the prime source of energy.Coal India presently contributes around 85% of the total coal production in India. It operates through 8 subsidiaries - Seven producing companies and one Planning & Design Institute
