Various Industries use the Steam Coal differently. That is to say some industries require the Coal with the lowest sizes, some have the use of a slightly bigger size but dont use the lumpy size; some industries use the lumpy size that is 15mm+ size. Historically all the units used to buy the steam coal and then process the same in house resulting into high costs. The grading here helps the industries to provide the material to the various industries as per their needs only.

Hence in India widely accepted steam coal is Indonesian Steam Coal and South African Stem Coal.

In Indian context the widely used Steam Coal types are Indonesian Steam Coal, South African Steam Coal and Australian Steam Coal. Out of the three Australian Steam Coal being of the Coking Grade requires Coking process and hence sold at a very high price.

Even though there are huge coal reserves available in India it is not preferred for the industrial usage. The reason being high ash and volatile material contents in the same. The coal reserves in India are situated in the Eastern belt. Hence for Western Belt of India availability of logistics and cost is also a barrier.
