WEMS is the Water Ecotoxicological Monitoring System
which detects toxicities in rivers, lakes, industrial
sewage, etc, through measures the yield of fluorescence
using algae as a eucaryota similar to human being.
WEMS consists of the measuring unit, driving unit,
computing and display unit, sampling unit and remote
monitoring program.
The principles of WEMS is based on the photosynthetic
mechanism. The algae produces the fluorescence
during photosynthetic process and WEMS detects the
difference of fluorescence yield ratio of biosensor
Closterium ehrenbergii for the control and testing water
sample. The difference calculated to WEM-TOX (Toxic
index of WEMS, Inhibition (%)) and it makes alarm when
this WEM-TOX over the limiting value for alarm.
