This refers to the apprehension on the use of ozone for drinking water treatment for supply to a residential colony. Basically ozone is the most powerful disinfectant known today. the novel method of tackling the problems of chloral-compounds, ozone was introduced in to these applications in Europe in the 1980s followed by the same in USA. The system utilizes ozone as the main or primary disinfectant where it takes care of destruction of microorganisms as well as oxidation of dissolved organics in the water, thereby reducing both of them. Thereby, just before the water is piped for distribution, required dosage of chlorine is introduced in the water. Here, the job of chlorine is only to maintain the required bacteria static state (meaning a state where bacteria introduced in to system cannot proliferate) of water till the water reaches the final point of use. The chlorine dosage has to be adjusted to ensure that the required residual chlorine is available at the final point of use.
