Today the most critical resource on planet earth is water. Water for drinking - for industries for agriculture. Water as waste requires disposal. The problem of water is becoming more critical day by day. More water for drinking is required for more people. Water requirements of industries will go up many folds. Larger quantity of sewage and sludge will have to be disposed-off to keep urban centers habitable and diseases free.

Water management in industry, therefore, assumes great importance. This is because with the current growth rate of population and industry, the share of water available for industry will reduce drastically as water available from surface and ground water will be barely sufficient for domestic and agricultural purposes. Industry will, therefore, have to adopt a high degree of water re-cycling in the coming years to minimize off-take of fresh water from available resorted to recycling, but this will need an extensive adoption by incorporating effective treatment technologies for recycling.

Though 70% of earths surface is covered with water, but 98% of that water is salty and unfit for domestic, agricultural and even industrial purposes.
