            There is growing interest in the World to ferrates as a media that can significantly improve wastewater treatment processes specifically on difficult to treat industrial effluents.  Several organizations are currently working on similar materials and attempting to enter water treatment markets.  The developed technology has a number of advantages compared to what is known in the field and has great potential for wide range of applications.

 

FernelTM can work in conjunction with existing water treatment plants or can be used with Fenixtec/UPEC recently developed electrocoagulation process that effectively removes and recovers heavy metals from industrial wastewater.

 

The developed material has been trademarked as FernelTM and is undergoing the final stages of testing.  It is expected that the technology will become available later in 2007.

 

The team of Fenixtec and UPEC Ltd has been working for the past several years in developing a new process for production of ferrates (specifically sodium/potassium ferrates) that would be effective, economical and would allow using of this material in the water treatment industry.  We developed the technology of production and the material in the two-stage process, making first the by-product of ferrates that is stable and can be stored for a long period of time (unlike actual finished product) and then in the second phase a production of highly concentrated sodium/potassium ferrate that can be used immediately by a customer on industrial wastewater pre-treatment or for drinking water treatment to remove arsenic in areas where this element is at elevated states (such as New England and South-West states in the US, as well as Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, China and other countries).

 

Ferrates are group of iron oxide compounds that exhibit the highest oxidizing properties of any chemicals known.  Until recently, ferrates were used only in laboratories due to difficulties to produce large quantities of ferrates economically and its aggressive features that make production very difficult.  On the other hand, ferrates promise to be one of best materials to be utilized for more effective and economical ways to treat contaminant on water and wastewater, specifically removal of such materials as arsenic, chromium, nickel, phosphates and organic impurities.
