Note: Prolonged drinking of RO water is generally not recommended as it is too pure and the US National Safewater Act requires re-mineralisation of RO water when sold as bottled drinking water for regular consumption.

It should be noted that RO uses a lot of water and approximately 80% of water ends up as waste.

Generally, the configuration would be a higher pressure water source, (about 80psi) - this can be provided by an Arkwater.com pump.  There could be a system of prefilters followed by a Doulton? ceramic filter which acts as the prefilter to the RO membrane.  The RO membrane would be positioned last.  Arkwater.com uses Saehan low pressure membranes and provides the appropriate housing for these membranes.

In general, the integrity of Reverse Osmosis membranes can be compromised if the water is highly contaminated.  Also, fouling due to biofilms will occur quickly unless there is a submicron prefilter.

The Doulton? microfiltration process is excellent for this purpose.

In some places, it may be necessary to use Reverse Osmosis to further treat water for drinking purposes.  An example of such a situation may be to reduce the mineral level of the water because of taste or because of arsenic levels in the water as may be found in Vietnam, Bangladesh and certain parts of Indochina.  In areas of mining, chemicals and and metals are also likely to find their way into the water supply and Reverse Osmosis may be an appropriate solution.
