The R.O. membrane consists of a sheet of thin polymer layer bonded onto a porous support, and rolled in a spiral configuration around a plastic tube. Unlike microfiltration or ultrafiltration
membranes, the R.O. membranes do not have a defined pore size. However, they are small enough to prevent all the ions, the smallest bacteria and viruses from passing through.
reverse osmosis process relies on a semi-permeable membrane, which allows water to pass through under very high pressure (sometimes 20 to 30 bar), whilst acting as a barrier to dissolved solids, such as minerals, salts or organic compounds.
