OIL WATER SEPARATORS

The OWS Series Packet Oil Separators are designed to separate nonsoluble
oils found particularly in car wash and oiling stations. The
treatment unit works entirely by physical treatment methods.
ALCER OWS SERIES OPERATIONAL THEORY
The OWS Series Packet Oil Separator Unit is manufactured by using AISI
304 quality stainless steel sheet and profile. Therefore all surfaces in
contact with water are rust-proof. The steel body of our packet treatment
unit functions by using the GRAVITY & COALESCING theory in order to
separate the oils and suspended solids in the wastewater.
Coalescing Theory: Gravity separation utilizes the difference in specific
gravity between the oil and water. Oil separates from a fluid at a rate
explained by Stoke's Law. The formula predicts how fast an oil droplet will
rise or settle through water based on the density and size of the oil
droplet size and the distance the object must travel.
Stoke's Law: This equation relates the terminal settling or rise velocity of
a smooth, rigid sphere in a viscous fluid of known density and viscosity to
the diameter of the sphere when subjected to a known force field
(gravity). The equation is:

V = velocity of rise (cm sec-?),
g = acceleration of gravity (cm sec-?),
r = "equivalent" radius of particle (cm),
dl = density of particle (g cm -?),
d2 = density of medium (g cm-?), and
B = viscosity of medium (dyne sec cm-?).
DESIGN PARAMETERS OF THE SYSTEM
The design meets specific criteria as indicated below:
To insure full usage of the cross-sectional area of the separator and
surface area of the separating plate, the influent flow is hydraulic
controlled.
Flow control and direction must be determined to prevent possible
interruption to flow around, under or over the separating plate.
Laminar flow rates must be maintained (Reynolds "Re" number less
than 500) in order to assist droplets to rise.
The Laminar flow rate in the separator must not exceed 3 feet per
minute or 15 times the droplet rising rate.
The separating chamber design, separating plate design/angle and
spacing must be sufficient to facilitate removal of accumulating
solids. Plates are to be smooth surfaced and angled at 60 degrees.
OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM
In brief, the system works as follows:
1. The wastewater from the facility fills the packet treatment unit via
a coarse grill and a channel or pump. The oils in the wastewater
pass through the lamella separator in the unit and accumulate in the
separator. The oil is skimmed off into the oil collecting vessel by the
skimmer palette and then removed once accumulated in the
strainer.
2. The suspended solids (if any) in the wastewater settle. The oil type
substances rise to the surface & are collected in the oil channel for
removal.
3. The sludge found at the bottom of the sedimentation tank is
disposed of periodically via a sewage truck.
4. The oil skimming operation is performed by pushing the plate into
the oil chamber. The need for this process is determined by the
amount of the oil on the surface. The oil chamber will require
periodical cleaning.
