The secondary treatment reduces the organic load of the wastewater, i.e. the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of the waste water by biological means. Secondary Treatment technologies comprises of Anaerobic and Aerobic processes. Anaerobic treatment is normally recommended for high strength wastes. The anaerobic process designs are based on either the Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) or the Fixed Film design. Hybrid designs are also available. The aerobic designs are based on the complete mix or attached growth processes. The oxygen is supplied using high efficiency fine pore ceramic or membrane based Diffused Aeration Systems. Diffused aeration options include floor mounted grid systems or floating type retrievable diffuser systems.
