Rocco Ruggiero revolutionized the American Calamari industry by designing state-of-the-art equipment that could quickly and inexpensively clean American-caught Loligo Pealei, making it competitive with hand-prepared imports. Ruggiero has processed over 250 million lbs. of domestic Calamari, and the Fisherman's Pride brand ranks as the number one cleaned Calamari in the United States.
In 1957, a small group of Mexican shrimp boat owners came together to market their flavorful harvest to North America. That humble association has since evolved into one of the largest seafood importer/marketing companies in the nation, a company called Ocean Garden. Sea Pearl is a family business, nurtured with family care and pride since 1966 in the Gulf Coast village of Bayou La Batre, Alabama, where shrimping has long been a way of life. Their unique heritage began in Alabama in the early 1700s as one of the first families to settle the area of Bayou la Batre. They make a living from the sea, with owners and operators whose knowledge and respect for the industry is rooted in years of working on their own shrimp boats. Sea Pearl focuses on strict quality-control standards every day and upgrade their plant each year, incorporating the latest measures of safety and assurance. Sea Pearl is regularly and continuously inspected, creating a mark of quality that began when it first opened for business 40 years ago.
The FDA is one of the primary Federal regulatory agencies responsible for seafood safety in the United States. It conducts mandatory surveillance programs with unannounced inspections of seafood processors, including packers, re-packers, and warehouses. Voluntary product inspection and grading is regulated by the United States Department of Commerce (USDC) and is available through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). It conducts fee based seafood inspection programs along with vessel and plant sanitation, product inspection, product grading and certification, label review, laboratory analysis, training, consultative and information services.
Fresh scallops, farm-raised tilapia, Chilean salmon, jumbo lump crabmeat, claw meat and crab fingers are delivered daily to our climate-controlled docks from all over the world. We also offer wild, safely caught mahi, sword fish, tuna and grouper, Dover sole, sea bass, and true American red snapper in fresh frozen form. Our shellfish includes domestic and international varieties of lobster tails, crawfish, scallops, calamari, an endless variety of shrimp, crab meat, king crab, softshell crab, and Alaskan crab. Clams are available in classic varieties of little neck, middle neck, top neck and cherrystone.
